An incoming World Champion, he was a mentor and role model to many in the shooting community, always willing to lend an ear or share advice when needed. Win or lose, he conducted himself with grace and humility that inspired everyone around him. This was revealed in a tweet by fellow shooter describing another colleague being gone too soon. Who was Jorge Ballesteros?

Growing up near Madrid, Spain, Jorge Ballesteros Fernandez has always had an innate competitive spirit. Born in San Sebastian, Guipuzcoa on May 27th 1983, his family relocated to Madrid when he was only six. He began participating in many different sports at a young age, including Judo, Karate, athletics, soccer and basketball. After completing high school in 2002 he attended Alcala de Henares University to study business management until 2008. That is when he began his career as a police officer. As a child, he was exposed to his father’s fascination with practical shooting (IPSC), which led to him being introduced to the sport of shooting at just 16 years old – manifesting an enthusiastic passion for the sport ever since.

Jorge Ballesteros is an accomplished competitor who has continued to show a commitment to his sport. In 2005, he earned bronze medal overall in the Open Division at the World Championship held in Guayaquil, Ecuador confirming his significant improvement. He went on to win silver medals in the European Championships, firstly in France in 2007 and then in Serbia in 2010 where he just missed out by finishing behind multiple-time world champion Eric Grauffel. After that, Ballesteros emerged as European Champion for the first time in 2013 and defended this title three years later, at Felsotarkany (Hungary). Without a doubt 2017 was his finest year when, through determination and dedication, he was crowned World Champion and achieved something he had dreamt of for many years.
