Who was John Paramore? John Paramor’s Career in Golf
In 1976, John Paramore joined the Tour for the first time as an administrator and began working towards becoming a referee. He passed the necessary exams to become a referee the following year and thus began his journey to becoming one of the most beloved figures in golf. In 1989, he became an international referee and later rose to become Head Referee in 2000. Throughout his years as an official, he officiated many major tournaments such as The Open Championship, Ryder Cup Matches, European Tour Events, Senior Major Championships and even World Golf Championships.
Paramore also held positions such as Chairman of Rules from 2007 until 2011 and then Executive Director of Rules from 2012 until 2016 when he retired from professional golf altogether. He was awarded with honorary membership into The PGA of Great Britain & Ireland due to being ever so dedicated to his work as a referee for over 40 years. His passion for fairness transcended into other aspects of golf such as coaching, rules making and umpiring which all contributed to him being one of the most respected individuals in golf throughout his lifetime.

John was the veritable Giant of ‘golf rules in action’ with the firm but gentle touch when called upon for a ruling. He had the greatest of respect from all of the pros and nobody would even think of trying it on with John. He got a very short retirement and deserved much much more. RIP John in the great golf courses in the sky.
Sad news, his father was the band leader and music arranger Norrie Paramour. John was a fair man who represented the sport in the manner it should be played. His loss leaves an enormous gap in golf, his honesty and integrity are his legend and will last forever.
