According to a press release from the Los Angeles Police Department, an audience member stormed the stage as Chappelle left it after his performance, lunging at him and throwing him to the ground.

The comedian’s spokesperson Carla Sims claims Chappelle “refuses to allow last night’s incident to overshadow the magic of this historic moment.”

Sims reported that Dave Chappelle celebrated four nights of comedy and music at the Hollywood Bow, breaking sales records for a comedian. She further stated that Chappelle continued the show despite the unfortunate and unsettling nature of the incident.

According to the District Attorney’s Office, the man accused of attacking comedian Dave Chappelle onstage at the Hollywood Bowl has been charged with attempted murder for allegedly stabbing his roommate at a transitional housing facility in December.

Isaiah Lee is scheduled to return to court on June 2 after entering a not-guilty plea to the felony charge.

In the initial attack, Lee was identified and apprehended thanks in part to the publicity that followed the Chappelle incident, according to the prosecution.

The county public defender’s office did not immediately respond to a message left asking a lawyer representing Lee for comment.

After allegedly rushing the stage and tackling Chappelle during his stand-up performance at the Hollywood Bowl on May 3, Lee was taken into custody.

Lee, 23, is accused of charging Chappelle while brandishing a toy gun with a switchblade as the comedian was performing this month’s Netflix Is a Joke Festival. 

He entered a not-guilty plea to four misdemeanor counts of battery, having a weapon with the intent to assault, entering the stage area without authorization while performance was in progress, and interfering with a performer or delaying an event.

The replica handgun he was carrying had a large blade that folded out like a pocket knife, according to the Police, who also released a picture of the object.

Chappelle finished the performance that was a part of the comedy festival “Netflix Is a Joke” without getting hurt.

Lee, who was initially detained on suspicion of assault with a dangerous weapon, is still incarcerated in place of bail of $30,000. He was instructed to stay at least 100 yards away from Chappelle and the Hollywood Bowl if he successfully posted bail and was granted release.

In a video statement announcing the charges, City Attorney Mike Feuer said that the alleged attack had to have repercussions and that his office takes protecting public safety very seriously and will vigorously pursue this case.

Since the assault, Lee has remained in jail. Lee entered a not-guilty plea to misdemeanor charges of battery, having a weapon with the intent to assault, and two counts of interfering with a public event.

No harm was done to Chappelle. According to the Police, Lee was hospitalized with minor wounds. Per the press release, a $30,000 bond has been set for Lee’s detention. According to Sims, Chappelle is helping with the ongoing Police investigation into this incident.

Netflix strongly defends the right of stand-up comedians to perform onstage without fear of violence, according to a spokesperson who spoke to USA TODAY on their behalf. The Hollywood Bowl’s representatives have also been contacted by USA TODAY for comment.
