The talented fighter has shown promise in the UFC bantamweight division. Nicolau is known for his well-rounded skill set and solid grappling and striking abilities.

In 2015, Matheus signed with Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and debuted at UFC Fight Night 77, where he submitted Bruno Rodrigues in the third round.

He followed up with another win over John Moraga, but his UFC career hit a bump when he was banned for the substance after his fight with Louis Smolka in 2017.

After testing positive for the substance, Matheus was suspended for a year and released by the UFC. After serving his time, Nicolau returned to the Octagon in 2019.

That time, he returned to the bantamweight division and scored unanimously over former flyweight champion John Moraga.

In addition to his MMA career, Nicolau is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and has won several regional and national BJJ championships in Brazil.

Even though the martial artist has not discussed his tattoo in public, his fans have talked about it every now and then.

Nicolau’s tattoo is all over his back and then spreads toward his left chest. Based on a Reddit discussion, the tattoo on his back is said to be inspired by Majima’s tattoo.

Majima, a character from the Yakuza game series, has a large full-body dragon tattoo that wraps around his torso and limbs, and it is also visible on his chest and arms.

The dragon is a traditional symbol in Japanese culture, representing power, strength, and good luck.

Similarly, another follower of his speculated Matheus’s art to be Mr. Burn’s tattoo.

More On Matheus Nicolau: Career And Upbringing

Matheus Nicolau began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at a young age and later added boxing to his skillset.

Nicolau’s passion for martial arts led him to sign with BRAVE CF to compete in the Bantamweight division.

As he prepares for his debut at BRAVE 25 in his hometown of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, he reflects on the tragic event that changed his life.

Despite having a different childhood than most Brazilian kids, Nicolau shared their love for football.

However, after his father passed away when he was 13 years old, he found solace in jiu-jitsu and decided to pursue martial arts as a career.

He had always loved MMA, having watched old fights on VHS tapes, but it was that same day of his father’s passing that he decided to become a mixed martial artist.

Nicolau made his professional debut at 17 and quickly became one of Brazil’s top prospects in the lighter-weight divisions, winning local promotions.

He turned pro in MMA in 2012, competing in various Brazilian promotions, including Jungle Fight and Shooto Brazil, where he compiled a record of 11 wins and one loss.

Based on his name and birthplace, Matheus likely has Brazilian heritage and grew up in a Brazilian cultural environment.

While his career has had some setbacks due to suspension and release from the promotion, he has rebounded with an impressive win and continues to compete.
