Danilo Bartulin was born in Chile. He earned his medical degree from the University of Chile and specialized in neurology and psychiatry.
The talented doctor joined the Chilean Socialist Party, becoming a close friend and partner of Salvador Allende, who led the Popular Unity coalition to victory in the 1970 presidential election.
Bartulin was named director of the National Health Service and sought to put Allende’s social and health policies into action.
He also accompanied Allende on his foreign missions, notably his 1972 visit to Cuba.
On 11 September 1973, Danilo Bartulin was at the presidential residence of La Moneda with Salvador Allende when it was attacked by the air force and army led by General Augusto Pinochet.
The doctor heard Allende’s final national speech and his decision to remain in the palace till the end.
He also witnessed the body of Allende, who allegedly committed suicide with a firearm given to him by Fidel Castro.
Despite surviving the explosion and shooting, Bartulin was arrested and tortured by the authorities.
He was reportedly transferred to many detention facilities, including the National Stadium, where he attempted to assist other injured or unwell detainees.
He was then exiled and lived in Spain, where he opposed Pinochet’s regime’s human rights crimes against humanity.
He also worked as a neurologist and psychiatrist, specializing in brain injury rehabilitation. He established the Spanish Society of Neurorehabilitation.
He published several books and essays regarding his time in Chile and his medical knowledge. In addition, he took part in documentaries and interviews regarding Allende’s life and legacy.

Victor Jara was a famous Chilean singer-songwriter and political activist who was killed by the military dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet in 1973.
Bartulin and Jara were both arrested and taken to the Estadio Chile, where they were tortured and separated from the other prisoners.
They spent their last hours together in fear and isolation. Danilo was with Victor Jara during his last days.
The torturers reportedly taunted the singer for trying to sing and play his tunes. Despite the torture, Victor Jara sang a section of the Popular Unity party’s anthem.
He was then subjected to a series of violent punches before being slain with a machine gun.
His body, along with the bodies of five other people, was discovered outside the walls of the Metropolitan Cemetery in the early hours of 16 September.
